"Nothing that I would change from today's tour. The stops were well thought out , and plenty of time was given for people to look around and take in the sides"

Kyoto · Arashiyama · Bamboo Grove & Tenryu-ji
The iconic Kyoto day-out — the bamboo grove, Togetsukyo Bridge, Tenryu-ji's Zen gardens, and the Iwatayama monkey park, all with commentary and zero transit-time fuss.
The Experience
All-in-one transport, English guide, UNESCO Tenryu-ji, and the classic Togetsukyo Bridge photo stop.
Four steps from Kyoto Station to the bamboo grove and back.
Meet your guide at the designated Kyoto Station meeting point (most tours start around 8:30 or 9 AM). Some tours provide bus transport; others take the JR Sagano line to Saga-Arashiyama Station.
Enter Sagano's famed bamboo grove — best photographed between the Tenryu-ji north gate and Okochi Sanso villa. Your guide points out the wind-chime effect and the pause spots where bamboo density is highest.
Tour UNESCO-listed Tenryu-ji temple's Zen garden (designed by Muso Soseki, 1339) and cross the Togetsukyo 'Moon-Crossing' Bridge over the Hozugawa river for the signature Arashiyama view.
Most tours include a hike up Iwatayama (20-minute uphill climb) where 120 free-roaming Japanese macaques live. View the Kyoto skyline from the summit, feed the monkeys from inside a caged pavilion, then return to Kyoto by 5 PM.

"Nothing that I would change from today's tour. The stops were well thought out , and plenty of time was given for people to look around and take in the sides"

"It was long but worth it. We went on Easter Sunday, so the Bamboo Forest and the Shinto Shrine were mobbed. There were some stairs which made it impossible for me to see everything but some accommodation was made for an old man with mobility issues. Our guide Koji was excellent, well informed and personable. He moved at a pace that challenged me but was necessary to see everything."
"We had a wonderful experience on the trip. The guide was very attentive, friendly, and made us feel comfortable the whole time. The tours were very enjoyable and well organised, and we really made the most of the day. Highly recommended!"
"Outstanding experience! Harry was our guide, and was very informative, efficient, and helpful. I hope to do this again in the future, especially with Harry, our tour guide"
"I loved the nara Excursion and the kyoto part. Our guide Gary was excellent, so helpful, kind and funny. Best guide. was a pleasure having him"
"Amy was the best guide and have us heaps of inside knowledge also very funny and a good Photographer"
"We had an excellent day with Nikson. (I don't know how to spell his name, sorry) He was absolutely hilarious and informative. Great character and personality. At each destination you have the option to follow him or you can do your own thing. The day is great value for money and we had plenty of time in each place. We didn't do the lunch option and instead found out own food which was very easy. We finished the day at Fushimi as it was getting darker. We wanted to stay and eat and as we realised we were close to our accommodation (a short train ride) we asked Nikson if we could make our own way home, which he was only with. Would definitely recommend this tour and you are very lucky if you get Nikson as your guide."

"The tour was really great. Harry our guide was so helpful. As a planner I was very happy with all the expectations that he laid out from the start. He knew we all signed up for a long tour and he kept us going until the end. Really loved the approach. Never had a question of what was next. Amazing job keeping us on time and loved the jokes! I appreciated have him guide us at each stop but then letting us explore but always had his eye out if we had a question!"
"Despite the tour being very long, our tour guide did a great job keeping everyone involved as well as trying to give people free to time do their own adventuring. Kyoto in general is an extremely busy city."
"Our tour guide Nick was absolutely fantastic - knowledgeable, funny, and very helpful. We thoroughly enjoyed his humor and the ability to maintain a large group organized and on schedule. The tour was really fun for the whole family, and the lunch was super delicious. Thank you very much for the great experience."
"Our guide for the day Nick was exceptional his humour won us over and had our daughter laughing so much he was so much fun and very informative with everywhere we visited that day and dropped us off in Osaka when we started our day in Kyoto, gave us recommendations for food and helped us with a taxi to our hotel."
"Nick our tour guide was phenomenal. Appreciated his knowledge and humour, he did a terrific job leading the tour"

"Great day - saw many things including Nara Deer Park which was alot of fun. The kobe beef lunch was fabulous"
"Our guide garry was very knowledgeable. He explained everything in detail amd made sure we reached every place on time. So polite and really helpful."
"We had a great time on our day trip through Kyoto and Nara. Our guide, Harry, was so friendly and knowledgeable. He went out of his way to make it a memorable day with an added matcha express experience and going out of his way to run and get the crackers for us to feed the deer. He showed us his favorite spots for matcha and local favorite foods. We had a great day learning about the culture and history of Japan."
"Perfect trip if you want to see the key highlights of Kyoto and Nara. Our guide Mike made the tour fun and interesting and adjusted the order of some attractions to minimise the crowds. We went in peak cherry blossom season so it was crazy busy especially at the bamboo forest. Our favourites were Nara park and Fushimi inari which were first and last on the tour. Food was great but there’s also lots of food stalls and souvenir shopping along the way."

"Escursione perfetta. Tutto organizzato nei minimi particolari. Guida Simpatica e disponibile. Super consigliato"

Three options: JR Sagano line to Saga-Arashiyama (15 minutes, ¥240), Keifuku Randen tram from Shijo-Omiya (22 minutes, ¥250), or the Kyoto Bus #28 (40 minutes, ¥240). Most guided day tours use a chartered coach to avoid the 2 PM tourist crowds on the JR line.
Yes. Sagano Bamboo Grove is a public pathway between Tenryu-ji temple's north gate and the Okochi Sanso villa — free, open 24/7. The optional Okochi Sanso villa itself costs ¥1,000 and includes a tea ceremony.
Sunrise to 8 AM is the only time the path is empty. By 9 AM there are 500+ visitors. Late afternoon (4 PM onwards) clears again. Overcast days work better for photography — harsh midday sun creates difficult contrast between the bamboo and the path.
Tenryu-ji is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Kyoto's five Zen head temples. The garden (Sogenchi Pond) was designed in 1339 by Muso Soseki and is one of the oldest preserved Zen gardens. Entry: ¥500 for gardens, ¥800 with temple interior.
Yes — the Iwatayama Monkey Park has 120 free-roaming Japanese macaques. Entry is ¥600. Access requires a 20-minute uphill hike (moderately steep). You feed the monkeys from inside a caged pavilion; outside the pavilion the monkeys are wild, friendly, and photographable.
Togetsukyo ('Moon-Crossing Bridge') is the iconic Arashiyama landmark — a 155m wooden-look bridge spanning the Katsura River. Walk across for free. The best photo angle is from the north bank looking south-east toward Iwatayama mountain.
Yes. The Hozugawa river cruise runs from Kameoka (16 km upstream) down to Arashiyama — a 90-minute scenic float through a forested gorge, ¥4,500. Book ahead in autumn. Shorter rowing-boat rentals are available directly at Togetsukyo Bridge for ¥1,500/hour.
Okochi Sanso is the former villa of Okochi Denjiro, a famous early-20th-century samurai film star. Open to the public, it's a 2-acre hillside garden with panoramic Kyoto views. Entry: ¥1,000, includes a matcha tea and traditional sweet served in the tea pavilion.
Half a day minimum (4 hours) covers bamboo grove, Tenryu-ji, Togetsukyo, and a quick river view. Full day (7+ hours) adds Iwatayama monkeys, Okochi Sanso, and a Hozugawa boat ride. If you have only 2 hours, skip everything except the bamboo grove and Togetsukyo.
Cherry blossoms (late March to early April) along the Katsura River are breathtaking but crowded. Autumn leaves (mid-November to early December) turn Tenryu-ji's garden into a painting. Summer: great bamboo greens, sparse crowds in the mornings. Winter: peaceful, temples open, but can be cold.
