"This was a great tour, I highly recommend it and love that the start times are early! After seeing all the crowds enter as we were leaving each site I appreciated it even more. Toshiya was a great guide and knew when to move us along to avoid the crowds and where to stop and share information. All in all I had a great time."

How the Fushimi Inari Early Morning Tour Works
Four steps from Kyoto Station to the torii tunnel summit trail.
Meet at Kyoto Station
Meet your guide at Kyoto Station's Hachijo exit at 6 AM (or your hotel for private tours). Take the JR Nara Line two stops — 5 minutes — to Inari Station, which sits directly opposite the shrine's main torii gate.
Enter the Shrine Grounds
Walk through the vermilion main gate as it's opening. Your guide explains Inari's role as the god of rice and prosperity, the nine-tailed fox (kitsune) messengers, and why every business in Japan has an Inari altar.
Walk the Torii Tunnels
Enter the famous Senbon Torii — the tunnel of a thousand gates. With no crowds, you can photograph the tunnel empty. Your guide points out the business names inscribed on the back of each gate.
Optional Summit Hike
Continue up to the Yotsutsuji crossroads (roughly 30 minutes uphill) for a panoramic view of Kyoto. Full summit hike takes 2–3 hours round trip — most tours turn back here. Return to Kyoto Station by 9 AM.

What Visitors Say
"Loved the tour. I was hoping there would be less crowds during the morning tour but it was still crowded. It’s just the time of year I guess. However, Hina, our guide, was amazing! From communication before the tour to keeping us all informed and on time, to her teaching us history of the sites and her country, we could not have asked for a better guide. She went above and beyond for us."
"Great tour for anyone visiting Kyoto for the first time! Natsuki was a very pleasant and professional and knowledgeable tour guide. From the very beginning, we received clear instructions on where to meet and what to bring. She had good pacing considering we visited 3 sites via public transportation. Additionally, she gave us advice on shopping and foods to try."

"Maya was an excellent guide in every way. She spoke perfect English. She was very knowledgable and friendly. I would highly recommend her"
"Genki (and the trainee Rianna) were really fun, friendly and helpful! They let us take the time to take photos and Genki also took great photos for us. They could tell us a lot about where we were and answer questions about Kyoto/Japan in general!"
"Natsu was such a great guide throughout all the sites. She's very knowledgeable and willing to share great recommendations of Kyoto activities and places. I 100% recommend her!!"

"Gene is absolutely fantastic guide who made this tour so enjoyable! He gives details insight take to hidden place and took some out of the world pics ! He is very knowledgeable and made our tour one to remember! We had great time."

"This was a really enjoyable tour; it covered a lot of ground (literally – the places we saw are quite far apart), and provided an excellent opportunity to see some of Kyoto’s most famous sights before they became extremely crowded. Itsuki was a wonderful guide – really knowledgeable and informative, and it was great to be able to ask questions/discuss some of the things I was curious about with him – it gave so much more context for the sites we were exploring, and some of the other places I subsequently explored on my visit. He also established a really good atmosphere within the group, and had the inside track on where to take us for the best lemon cheesecake snack :)"
"We had really great morning with LJ as our Guide who took care of us thru tragic, 12000 steps walk and feed us with great information on perfect English. As a student of Sociology he was full of information about every day life in Japan, on top of the of history and location facts."
"It was a great tour - and definitely worth the early wakeup seeing the crowds that arrived when we were leaving. Hiro was a great guide. Very polite, good storytelling and on top helpful with extra information and recommendations for the rest of our stay in the Kyoto region."

"Our tour guide was awesome. She gave us a brief history of all the sites. Once the tour ended she guided us on how to get back to our destination. Would recommend this tour."
"Maya is a great guide who had shared a lot of insights into Japanese history, society and culture. She took take of everyone in the group."
"An awesome tour. Guide was brilliant. Would highly recommend"
"Genki was an outstanding guide. He gently lead our group through various bus and train trips all over Kyoto to ensure we visited the highlights of this city at a relaxed pace. Throughout the tour he explained many cultural aspects of the shrines and the temple assisting us to participate in the various rituals in a thoughtful way. Plus he was great fun responding to each member of our group in a respectful but lighthearted way."
"Great time and very nice activity. We were very lucky with the tour guide, Natsuki. She is very knowledgeable but also great and a very nice person. The only downside is the price. In my opinion the experience is nice but too expensive"
"our guide was great!"

"Genki war einer der besten Guides, die wir je kennengelernt haben. So engagiert und freundlich, mit fundierten Kenntnissen. Die Tour war ein absolutes Highlight unserer Japanreise. Drei tolle Highlights mit öffentlichen Verkehrsmitteln: Top, top, top!!!!"

Everything you need to know about visiting Fushimi Inari shrine.
Yes. Fushimi Inari Taisha is free and open 24/7 — there is no entry fee, ever. You pay only for a guided tour if you want English narration, early-morning timing, or help navigating the summit trails.
You're paying for three things: early-morning timing (tours start at 6 AM so you see the torii gates empty), an English-speaking guide who explains Inari mythology and shrine etiquette, and the certainty of actually reaching the scenic Yotsutsuji viewpoint without getting lost.
For empty-tunnel photos, arrive by 7 AM. By 8:30 AM the main Senbon Torii tunnel has hundreds of visitors. After 4 PM it clears again. Guided early-morning tours meet at 5:30–6:00 AM for maximum impact.
The full summit hike (Ichinomine) takes 2–3 hours round trip. Most guided tours go only as far as the Yotsutsuji crossroads — about 30 minutes uphill — which gives the best city view without the full climb. Physical difficulty: moderate cardio, ~500 vertical metres to the summit.
Yes, approximately. Estimates range from 10,000 to 30,000 depending on whether you count the small wooden gates on the summit trails. The famous 'Senbon Torii' (thousand gates) tunnel is only the first section — the full mountain trail has many more.
Yes, and it's spectacular. The torii gates are illuminated at night, and the shrine is safe after dark. Popular for sunset arrival around 6 PM, staying until 8 PM for the lantern glow. Guided evening tours are rare but available through private-tour operators.
Fox statues (kitsune), stone altars scattered through the mountain forest, a bamboo forest section on the back route, the Seicho ritual purification pond, and the Mochi-ga-take peak with panoramic views. Food stalls selling kitsune-udon line the path at the base.
Yes. Most day tours bundle Fushimi Inari with Arashiyama, Kinkakuji, or Nara. A classic combination is Fushimi Inari in the early morning (6–8 AM), then Kiyomizu-dera late morning, then Arashiyama in the afternoon.
Yes. Inari-mae Street (the approach to the shrine) has kitsune-udon shops, inari-zushi stalls, grilled sparrow (yakitori-style — a regional specialty), and matcha-flavoured sweets. Your guide usually recommends one specific stall.
Partially. The base area, the main shrine buildings, and the first 200 metres of the torii tunnel are paved and flat. Beyond the first red-lantern tunnel, the path becomes stone steps and uneven gravel. Wheelchairs can access the main shrine; the summit is not accessible.
