"Wow wow wow. Amazing set, cutting edge lighting, magic, dance, juggling, mime and every minute of it made our jaws drop. And to impress my teenage boys to the point they rave after is incredibly rare. Highlight of our trip to Japan."

How GEAR Theatre Tickets Work
Four steps from booking to curtain call.
Pick Your Showtime
GEAR runs daily evening performances (typically 7:00 PM, occasionally with afternoon shows on weekends). Pick your date and seat tier in the booking widget — front-row floor and balcony tiers available.
Arrive at the Heritage Theatre
The venue is a converted 100-year-old building near Sanjo subway station in central Kyoto, easy walk from Pontocho or Gion after dinner. Doors open 30 minutes before showtime — arrive early to enjoy the historic interior.
Watch the 90-Minute Performance
Five performers tell a wordless story through mime, breakdance, magic, light, and laser projection. Because it's non-verbal, it works equally well for English, Japanese, French, or any other-language audiences — and is suitable for all ages.
Meet the Cast (Optional)
After the show, the cast often comes out to greet the audience for photos. The whole evening — show plus meet — typically runs about 2 hours total. Combine with a Pontocho dinner for a classic Kyoto night out.

What Visitors Say
"I was a bit sceptical about the show but when we found the venue near to busy shopping area we got good vibes . It was my birthday during April so i got a gift of 1000 yen and another voucher for the shop worth 1000 yen. Once we went in it was incredible set and very well organized . The show its self was outstanding and the best thing i've seen for a long time . I enjoyed it better than Le Mis that we saw in Singapore a few weeks ago . I could not recommend the GEAR theatre enough, quirky , entertaining , different , really well done . 90 mins and only 5 of a cast. Loved it"

Everything you need to know about booking the GEAR non-verbal show.
GEAR is a non-verbal theatre performance staged in a 100-year-old heritage theatre near Sanjo in central Kyoto. Five performers combine mime, breakdance, magic, light, and laser/projection effects across a wordless 90-minute story. It's the longest-running modern stage show in Kyoto, with multiple national theatre awards.
GEAR is non-verbal — there's no spoken dialogue at all. It works in any language because the story is told entirely through movement, music, and visual effects. The pre-show announcements and any printed programme materials are available in English, Japanese, Chinese, and Korean.
The performance itself runs 90 minutes with no intermission. Plan for about 2 hours total in the venue once you include arrival, seating, and an optional post-show photo opportunity with the cast.
Art Complex 1928 building, near Sanjo Station in central Kyoto. It's a 5-minute walk from Sanjo Keihan or Sanjo subway, and walking distance from Pontocho, Gion, and Kawaramachi. Easy to combine with dinner before the show or drinks after.
Standard schedule is one evening show daily at 7:00 PM, with occasional matinees on weekends and holidays. Confirm specific dates and times in the booking widget — schedule rotates and some Mondays are dark days.
Yes — because it's non-verbal and visually driven (mime, dance, light effects), GEAR works for ages 6+. There's no scary content, but the laser/strobe sequences may be intense for very young children. Most families with kids 8+ love it.
Yes for weekends and high season (cherry blossom season late March to mid-April, autumn foliage November, Golden Week early May, New Year). The theatre is intimate (under 100 seats) and weekend evening shows often sell out 1-2 weeks ahead. Weeknight winter shows are easier to walk in.
Smart casual is fine. Most attendees wear what they wore for daytime sightseeing. The venue is informal but it's still a theatre — beach attire and flip-flops feel out of place.
No photos or video during the performance — the lighting cues and copyrighted choreography are protected. Photos are encouraged before the show in the historic theatre lobby and during the optional post-show meet-and-greet with the cast.
Different intent. Kabuki is traditional Japanese theatre (in Japanese, with English audio guide rental); a geisha show is cultural/educational. GEAR is contemporary entertainment that happens to be in Kyoto — closer to a Cirque du Soleil show in spirit than a traditional cultural night. Many travellers do both: a daytime cultural experience plus GEAR for the evening.
