How the 3-Hour Geisha Experience Works
Four parts: the Gion walk, the show, the optional dinner, and the keepsake.
Meet in Gion at Dusk
Meet your English-speaking cultural guide in central Gion just before sunset — the time when real maiko and geiko start moving between appointments. Small group (typically 6–10 people), so you can ask questions throughout.
Cultural Walk Through Hanamachi
A 60-minute guided walk through the Gion hanamachi (geisha quarter) — past Shirakawa canal, Hanamikoji street, and the okiya houses where maiko live and train. Your guide explains the 5-year apprenticeship, the daily routine, and how to spot a real maiko vs a costumed tourist.
Live Maiko or Geiko Performance
Move indoors to a private ochaya teahouse for a 60-90 minute performance: traditional Kyoto-style kyomai dance, shamisen music, and an interactive Q&A with the performer through your guide. You'll learn the difference between maiko (apprentice) and geiko (full geisha) and the meaning behind specific dances.
Optional Kaiseki Dinner + Keepsake
If you select the dining add-on, the experience includes a multi-course kaiseki meal in the same space the geisha visited. Even without dinner, every guest leaves with a small keepsake (often a calligraphy or fan signed by the performer). Total runtime: 3–3.5 hours.

What Visitors Say
"If you’re wishing to explore geisha culture while remaining sensitive to the women who live and practice the art, this tour is for you. Kenta was incredibly fun, polite, knowledgable, and most importantly for us, respectful to the young meikos. Having a private dance performance with yummy food was just the cherry on the top of the whole experience."
"This amazing tour was the highlight of our Japan trip. Ken is very knowledgeable and engaging and very informative about the misterios life of the Geisha, creating a relaxed atmosphere for dinner and Q & A session with a beautiful Maiko. A must do!"
"I never leave reviews for anything, but this was SO special and unique. Ken was a fabulous educator and host, and meeting the meiko and seeing her perform was a once in a lifetime experience! If you do once tour in Kyoto, this IS the one!"
"Ken was informative and fun! My mom and I had great time and the group we were paired with was awesome!"
"our guide Ken was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable and made our tour very special with our small international group of persons from all over the world!!!!"
"It was a great tour in Gion district and including exclusive Geysha show which you can not get to see by yourselves since exclusive access is required. Kenta is very knowledgeable and great guy, strongly recommended!"
"Akita was an excellent guide, she showed us buildings in Kyoto and explained their uses by Geisha. We walked through three areas, saw a Geisha used shrine, past a large shrine. Did not see a Grisha or Maiko as we walked. All the time she kept us informed. She organised a chair for my husband as it was sit on a cushion on the floor meal. The food was ok, the weakness of the evening. The Maiko answered questions ( translated by Akita )for ages then danced 2 dances. She was delightful. We kept eating and the group was small only 7 so it was a lovely evening. Recommend Akita as a guide."

"This tour was the highlight of our visit to Kyoto. The tour guide, Kenta, was warm, friendly and had really good English. He was informative and engaging. The audience with a Maiko was amazing. We got to ask her many questions and learned much about her life. She also danced for us. The small group size meant the audience with the Maiki was very private and special."
"This tour with Kenta was fantastic. Small group so able to experience private dining of kaiseki meal whilst watching a beautiful Mai ko dance. Able to ask questions which were answered well"

"Akari was an amazing guide, so full of energy and passion for the Geisha culture. Bonus she taught us some tricks about navigating restaurants, a local word to make us feel more comfortable thanking people and recommendation on places to visit (outside of the tour). She was so kind and made sure we were all comfortable throughout the tour (we were a large party of 6). The maiko performance was beautiful and it was cool to get one on one time to chat and take photos. I would 100% recommend."

"Akira was a great tour guide and was very knowledgeable. It was lovely to meet with a Maiko and ask questions about her life."
"A good bit of fun. The sumo’s were excellent and interacted well with the audience"
"This was such a fun and unique experience. Akari was a fabulous guide, and lead us through a really fascinating afternoon. Highly, highly recommend!"
"Kenta was very engaging and personable! He has a great respect for his community and the Geiko, Meiko history. The food and event was wonderful! I recommend the experience!"

Browse All Kyoto ToursFAQ — Geisha Experience Kyoto
Real geisha vs tourist demos, what's bookable, what's not, and how to spot a fake maiko.
Yes — for the featured 3-hour Gion experience, the performer is a working maiko or geiko from the Kyoto hanamachi system. Many tourist 'geisha shows' use actresses or retired performers; this one books active maiko/geiko on their actual schedules. Smaller meet-and-greet experiences ($49 range) also use real maiko but in shorter formats.
A maiko is an apprentice geisha, typically 15-20 years old, in years 1-5 of a multi-year training programme. She wears bright colours, a long obi, and elaborate hair ornaments. A geiko (Kyoto's word for geisha) is a fully trained adult performer in more subdued colours and a shorter obi. Maiko are visually striking; geiko are more refined.
Maybe — but it's increasingly rare and often disrespectful. Real maiko move at dusk between okiya (training houses) and ochaya (teahouses). Tourists chasing them with cameras has become such a problem that Gion banned photography on private alleys in 2024. The featured tour walks you through the hanamachi at the right hour, with a guide who knows the etiquette.
A 'show' is typically a 15-30 minute scheduled performance in a tourist venue (museum, theatre) — often using costumed actresses. An 'experience' includes interactive elements: a guided walk through Gion, conversation with the performer through a translator, kaiseki dining, or a teahouse Q&A. The featured tour is an experience in this stricter sense.
746427 is a 15-minute museum performance — a budget peek that lets you see a maiko dance briefly without context. The featured 479801 is 3-3.5 hours: cultural walk + private indoor performance + Q&A + optional dinner. You're paying for the cultural depth, the small group size, the booking of an actual working maiko's time, and the venue access in Gion.
Dining is an optional add-on, not always included in the base price — check the booking widget for the dining option (typically $50-80 extra for kaiseki). Without dinner, the experience runs about 3 hours and you receive a small refreshment + sweets. With dinner, the full evening is 3.5 hours.
Yes — during the indoor performance and Q&A, photos are allowed (no flash, no video without permission). Photos with the maiko are usually arranged at the end of the experience as part of the price. On the outdoor Gion walk, photo etiquette is different (no chasing/blocking). Your guide explains the rules at the start.
No — your cultural guide is fluent in English and translates throughout. The maiko/geiko herself typically doesn't speak English, but the guide handles all conversation, Q&A, and explanation of dances and customs. Japanese is helpful but not required at any point.
Smart casual works fine — the same level of dress as for a nice restaurant. Avoid overly casual (shorts, flip-flops) since you'll be in a traditional ochaya. Comfortable shoes for the 60-minute walking portion are essential. Some travellers wear yukata (light kimono) for the experience — fine but not required.
Different intent. The makeover ($145, 2.5 hours) lets YOU dress as a maiko: full kimono, white face makeup, hair ornaments, and a professional photo session. The featured experience lets you observe a real maiko. If you want to wear the costume, book the makeover; if you want to understand the culture, book the featured experience. Many travellers do both on different days.
1-2 weeks for the featured 3-hour experience — small group capacity (10 max) and limited dates per week. Cherry blossom season (late March-mid April) and autumn foliage (November) often sell out 3-4 weeks ahead. Off-season weeknights are easier; you can sometimes book 2-3 days out.
