How the Gion Geisha Walking Tour Works
Four steps from Yasaka Shrine to Shirakawa's hidden backstreets.
Meet at Yasaka Shrine
Meet your guide at the Yasaka Shrine's west gate at dusk (usually 5 or 6 PM). Your guide hands out headsets so you can hear stories clearly without disturbing residents.
Enter Hanamikoji
Walk down Hanamikoji Dori, the main geisha street — wooden teahouses on both sides, paper lanterns glowing overhead. Your guide explains the five hanamachi districts and the maiko-to-geiko training path.
Cross into Shirakawa
Cross over the Shirakawa canal into the quieter, lesser-known geisha district. Your guide points out working ochaya teahouses, which are mostly invisible to casual tourists.
Learn the Etiquette
Learn the unwritten rules of Gion: where photography is permitted, how to spot a maiko versus a geiko, and why tourists should never follow a maiko. 90 minutes total, ending near the Minami-za kabuki theatre.

What Visitors Say
"A very soothing experience to see Gion at night. The tour guide was very engaging, and knew a lot about Gion and was able to tell it in a funny way"
"This was an amazing tour! Very informative, interesting and beautiful! I would recommend to anyone travelling to Kyoto"
"We did the Kyoto Geisha walking tour and it turned out to be one of the highlights of our trip. Anton, our guide, was exceptional, his knowledge, passion, and the way he explained everything made the whole experience come alive. He has a real gift for storytelling and kept us completely engaged throughout. To be honest, we were quite tired after a long day and a bit skeptical at first but Anton completely changed that. Thanks to him, what we expected to be a simple walk became one of the most memorable experiences of our trip. We were also lucky enough to see a real geisha, which made the evening even more special. Highly recommend this tour, don’t miss it if you’re in Kyoto. And if you can, go with Anton!"
"We loved the tour , was so calm everywhere and our guide gave us so much information . Michael had so much knowledge about everything , beside he gave us so many recommendations on how to make our trip in Kyoto better . We were lucky to see the Geisha for a moment . Totally worthy of it ."

"We had a fantastic guided walking tour with Anton through the historic Gion district in Kyoto. His deep knowledge of the area, combined with a great sense of humour, made the experience both engaging and enjoyable. "Michael was outstanding! Informative engaging and fun!"

"We loved exploring Gion and the “hidden gems” and local tips on how to enjoy different areas. Since we were coming from Osaka, we should have done an earlier tour because we were stuck in Kyoto since the trains don’t run late."

"We arrived in Kyoto around 4pm and had this walking tour booked for 6pm. I’m so glad we did it. Kaz was our guide and he was really great. Very informative with information and photos. The walking route through Gion and geisha area was fantastic, especially after dark when the lanterns were lit. Thank you Kaz"

Everything you need to know about walking Kyoto's geisha district.
A maiko is an apprentice (aged 15–20), wearing brightly coloured kimono with long sleeves, a heavy obi belt, and an ornate hair decoration (kanzashi). A geiko is a fully trained geisha (aged 20+), wearing more subdued colours and a simpler hairstyle. Kyoto uses 'geiko' instead of the national term 'geisha'.
Often yes, but not guaranteed. Evening tours (5–7 PM) are scheduled to coincide with when maiko and geiko walk between their okiya lodging houses and their ochaya engagements. Your guide knows the exact routes — sightings are common but not a promise.
Be respectful and use a zoom lens from a distance. In 2024, Kyoto banned photography on certain private Gion lanes after complaints about tourist behaviour. On tours, your guide points out which streets allow photos. Never chase, touch, or stop a maiko en route.
Dusk (about 5–6 PM) is the most atmospheric — lanterns lit, streets quiet, and the highest chance of seeing a maiko. Morning walks (9–11 AM) show Gion empty and sunlit, good for photography. Night tours (7–9 PM) catch the post-dinner lantern glow.
Most Gion walking tours run 90 minutes to 2 hours. They cover Hanamikoji (the main geisha street), Shirakawa (the canal district), and often end at Yasaka Shrine or the Minami-za kabuki theatre. Longer tours add Pontocho and Gion Corner cultural shows.
No. A walking tour explores the district's streets and explains geisha culture. A geisha performance books a maiko or geiko to entertain you with dance, games, and conversation. Performances are $75–200+ per person and usually need a reservation 2–4 weeks ahead.
Yes. 'Maiko makeover' studios dress tourists in full maiko costume — kimono, obi, wig, and white face makeup — and include a professional photo session. Prices range from $80 (basic) to $200+ (full photo shoot with outdoor Gion walking time). Search for 'maiko henshin' to find these.
Yes. Gion is one of Kyoto's safest districts. Evening foot traffic is heavy with both tourists and locals, the area is well-lit, and there's a visible police presence. Walking tours end by 9 PM; the last metro runs until midnight.
Ochaya (traditional tea houses where geisha entertain) operate on the 'ichigen-san okotowari' system — no first-time customers. You cannot walk in off the street and be served. Tours explain this from outside; your guide will not attempt to enter.
Older kids (10+) with an interest in culture usually enjoy Gion walks. Younger children may find the 2-hour walking pace tiring. If the walking tour is at dusk, note that toddlers may be sleepy by the end. Family-adapted private tours are available.
