The Experience
Bullet train transport included, English-speaking guide, Peace Park + Miyajima in one day, and return to Kyoto by evening.
Four steps from Kyoto Station to Miyajima's floating torii and back.
Meet your guide at Kyoto Station around 7 AM. Board the Shinkansen bullet train for the 1h40min ride to Hiroshima. Reserved seats included; you travel as a group with the guide.
Arrive in Hiroshima by 9:30 AM. Visit the A-Bomb Dome (UNESCO), the Peace Memorial Park, the Children's Peace Monument, and the Peace Memorial Museum. Your guide provides historical context — 2–3 hours at the site.
Lunch break in Hiroshima (not included in most packages — your guide recommends okonomiyaki at the Okonomi-Mura food hall). Then take the tram + ferry combination to Miyajima island (90 minutes total).
Walk out to the floating torii gate of Itsukushima Shrine (best at high tide). Meet the sacred deer, climb to Daisho-in temple if time allows. Return ferry, return bullet train, arrive back in Kyoto around 8–9 PM.

Hiroshima is 350 km (220 miles) west of Kyoto. The Shinkansen bullet train covers the distance in 1 hour 40 minutes. Total round-trip travel time is about 3.5 hours — which is why day trips start at 7 AM and end near 9 PM.
Yes, if you have at least 3 days in Kyoto. Hiroshima is the best-known Japanese historical site for Western visitors after Tokyo's imperial sites. The Peace Memorial Museum is consistently rated the most impactful cultural experience in Japan. If you only have 1–2 days in Kyoto, skip Hiroshima.
Yes. The $119 Hiroshima day trip includes round-trip reserved-seat Shinkansen tickets (normally ¥9,700 × 2 = ¥19,400 = $130+). Plus the English-speaking guide, entrance fees, and the ferry to Miyajima. It's arguably the best-value organized day trip in Japan.
Standard itinerary: 9:30 AM Peace Memorial Park + A-Bomb Dome (90 mins), 11:00 AM Peace Memorial Museum (90 mins), 12:30 lunch break (not included), 2:00 PM ferry to Miyajima, 2:30 PM Itsukushima Shrine + floating torii (90 mins), 4:30 PM return ferry, 8:30 PM back in Kyoto.
The Hiroshima Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall, 140 metres from the hypocenter of the 1945 atomic blast. One of the few buildings left partially standing. Now a UNESCO World Heritage site as a memorial to the victims and a warning against nuclear weapons.
The floating torii gate of Itsukushima Shrine — one of Japan's 'Three Views'. At high tide the vermilion torii appears to float on the sea; at low tide you can walk up to it. UNESCO site. The island also has friendly sika deer, Daisho-in temple, and a 535m mountain (Misen).
Usually no. Lunch is a 60-90 minute break in Hiroshima (in the Hondori shopping arcade area). Your guide recommends specific spots — the Okonomi-Mura food hall (25 okonomiyaki stands on three floors) is the classic choice. Budget ¥1,000–1,500 for a proper meal.
Yes, with some effort. The JR Pass covers the Kyoto-Hiroshima Shinkansen. On your own, budget: train tickets (covered by JR Pass), Peace Museum admission ¥200, ferry to Miyajima ¥360. Total $3–5 extra for unguided visit. You save on the tour cost but lose the translation and itinerary scaffolding.
For kids under 10, yes — a 14-hour day with 3.5 hours on trains is exhausting. The Peace Museum is also emotionally heavy (graphic exhibits of the 1945 bomb effects). Older kids (12+) usually handle it well and find the experience memorable. Strollers are bulky on the ferry.
Yes — stay a night in Hiroshima. Business hotels near Hiroshima Station run $70–100/night. You arrive in the afternoon, see the Peace Memorial Museum at your own pace, dine on okonomiyaki, visit Miyajima fresh next morning, and return to Kyoto or continue onward. Most tour operators offer this as a premium 2-day package.
