How the Kyoto Cooking Class Works

Four steps from apron on to your final bowl.

  1. Arrive at the Kitchen

Arrive at the cooking studio (central Kyoto, close to Kyoto Station or Karasuma). Meet your chef-instructor, put on an apron, and wash your hands. Classes are usually 6–10 people at individual stations.

  2. Learn the Technique

Your chef demonstrates each step — pulling noodles, folding gyoza, forming rice balls, or making sushi rolls. Instruction is in English with live translation available if needed.

  3. Cook Your Own Dishes

Make each dish yourself at your own station. Expect 2–3 final dishes — ramen with handmade broth, 8 gyoza dumplings, and onigiri, or nigiri and maki sushi rolls.

  4. Eat & Take Home the Recipe

Sit down with your group and eat what you made. Take home a printed recipe card in English. Total class time: 2–3 hours. Most classes include green tea or water; drinks beyond that are extra.

"This was one of my favorite experiences we had in Kyoto on our trip! Minori and Nori were an amazing duo; professional, knowledgeable, and friendly. I hadn't been sure how we would get through so many dishes in the time allotted, but they have the process down to a science and are efficient in every step, from their rotation of dishes/ingredients to the order in which we were instructed to do things. The food we made was delicious and I feel like I gained a greater base knowledge to both appreciate and cook ramen, gyoza, and onigiri in the future. They provided the recipes at the end and Nori even shared his business card to reach out if we have any questions when cooking at home. I would recommend doing this towards the beginning of your trip, if possible, to have more knowledge about Japanese dishes and ingredients throughout! Thanks to the team for a great experience."

"One of the best activities of our travers to Japan, the staff was INCREDIBLY nice, it was super easy to follow and we tasted our foods afterwards and it tasted amazing! Highly recommend it for a rainy day!"

Laura Germany

"What a lovely way to spend the morning! Our guides were all so friendly, and Nori-san was excellent. I loved getting to know more about Japanese ingredients and the process of creating each set of items. Everything was very easy to follow, but also as an experienced cook it was nice to take the time and feel like you could pay attention to details as well. The ingredients were prepared for you so the class was quick and efficient without sacrificing getting to see and feel each component. And it was excellent cooking with my teen. The meal afterwards was enough to satisfy, so it was a combined experience that lets you then move on to the next thing!"

Tomer United States

"We love to cook, so when given the opportunity to learn how to make authentic Japanese food, we jumped at the chance. Our host and master chefs were truly amazing. Their coaching style, friendly and positive personality were contagious. The support they provided along the journey of creating each dish was very warm, and so appreciated. We had the best time and enjoyed the delicious food we made at the end of the experience. Thank you! You guys were truly the best!"
