How the Kyoto Walking Tour Works
Four steps from the meeting point to the end of a two-UNESCO walk.
Meet Near Imperial Palace
Meet your licensed guide at the designated spot near the Kyoto Imperial Palace (Kyoto Gyoen) entrance — usually the Imadegawa Gate, 5 min walk from Imadegawa subway station. Small-group format (usually 6–12 people); headsets distributed for crowd-noise coverage.
Tour the Imperial Palace
Enter the palace grounds (free entry, guide handles all logistics). Walk the ceremonial courtyards where emperors were crowned, see the Shishinden throne hall, the Seiryoden residential quarters, and the Oikeniwa gardens. About 75 minutes in the palace complex.
Walk to Nijo Castle
A 20-minute walk through central Kyoto takes you to Nijo Castle — the shogun's Kyoto residence. Along the way your guide covers the Tokugawa vs Imperial power struggle, why the shogun built a fortress next to the palace, and the 1867 handover.
Explore Nijo Castle
Inside Ninomaru Palace, walk the 'nightingale floors' — 17th-century flooring designed to squeak on footfall as an intruder alarm. Tour the reception halls, see the gold-leaf screen paintings, and walk the Ninomaru gardens. Total tour length: about 3 hours.

What Visitors Say
"David was a great tour guide. He is clearly very knowledgeable of the sites visited and was happy to always answer any questions whilst also sharing some interesting facts or stories. Thank you for a very good time!"

"Nijo castle was one of our favourite places in Japan, so beautiful! Our guide, Taku, was fantastic. 🤩 He was well prepared with images/illustrations supporting his explanations. He also was indicating the best spots for pictures, and making pictures to our family. He was also very kind of given us the best present, a memory card and one of our photos in Nijo castle printed."
"Naoke was a fountain of knowledge and gave a lot of very interesting background knowledge to our visit. This meant that we were able to not only enjoy the physical sites but also understand how things had evolved over the centuries and why. We also enjoyed his sense of humor and personal insights into the culture of Japan. Good English was perfect which also really helped for the hard of hearing like me. If you want a great time with a great guide Naoke is your man."
"Great tour! Jasmine was very knowledgeable and she managed the tour at a very comfortable pace. Highly recommend tour and Jasmine."
"Taku was an excellent guide whose knowledge of the history of both sites gave us a great insight as to their significance. He expressed himself very well and even ensured we caught the right bus for the next attraction"
"This walking tour of the Kyoto Imperial Palace and Nijo Castle is a fantastic way to experience the rich history of the city. The itinerary is well-paced, offering a deep dive into the architectural beauty and cultural significance of these two iconic landmarks. The highlight of the experience was our guide, Katsuhiko Ishida. His knowledge of Japanese history is truly impressive, and he shared fascinating insights that we never would have discovered on our own. Beyond his expertise, he was incredibly attentive to the group's needs. He even went above and beyond by organizing a taxi transfer between the two sites, which made the transition seamless and kept the energy high for the second half of the tour. If you are looking for an educational and stress-free way to see Kyoto’s imperial history, this tour comes highly recommended. Asking for Katsuhiko will ensure you have an expert and thoughtful professional leading the way."

"It was great to have a local who has lived here his whole life. Historical facts can be learned from a book, but what i appreciated most about Taku was that he still carries the traditional values of Japan. He shared how traditional Japanese culture and values embodied in the things we were seeing. I have a greater appreciation for Japanese history and culture and for me, that’s an important part of traveling."
"Really enjoyed the tour. Taku, our guide, was great. He was very knowledgeable about the history and explained everything clearly and answered all our questions. We were a little disappointed with the Imperial Palace. The various gates were spectacular but the palace itself was a little underwhelming. The gardens were beautiful. A lovely day out though overall."

"the guide gave an overview before we started, which was nice and helped anticipating."
"We loved our tour with Raphael Matsui. We learned more about Nijo Castle and the Imperial Palace than we would have with a self guided tour and he answered many other questions about Japanese history and culture. Thank you Raphael!"
"Thank you for today’s tour. We had a wonderful day, saw a lot, and learned many new things. We highly recommend it to everyone!"

"Super informative Tour and Kenta was a great Guide. Very polite, knowledgeable and overall a nice guy."

"Taku great tour guide! Incredible knowledge. Very educational tour. Historic & Fun. This tour is was completely private. Then Nijo Palace it’s a must to visit. Request Taku"

"Our guide Cecilia was very knowledgeable and gave us a great tour. Felt like this guided tour is the best way to see the imperial palace and nijo castle"
"Increíble todo lo que nos mostró, afortunadamente coincido la fecha en la que pudimos ver el trono del emperador y la emperatriz. Nos toco también presenciar un baile tradicional. Ceci increíble gracias"

"El mejor tour! Ceci nos ha explicado datos dentro del tour y también cultura general de Japón. Aparte ha sido sumamente comprensiva con las necesidades de mis hijos !"

"The tour was very cool and full of historical facts. The guide was super knowledgeable and kind and accommodating. The tour was a little slow paced for us, but still would highly recommend this guide and the experience. We had a wonderful time and got about ~5500 steps in!"

"The two palaces and gardens are really nice, especially on a sunny bright day. The guide is a nice person."

Everything you need to know about Kyoto walking tours — Imperial Palace, Nijo Castle, and more.
Kyoto Imperial Palace is free to enter — your guide handles all registration. Nijo Castle has a ~$7 entry fee that is included in the featured tour price ($38). Budget walking tours that don't include Nijo Castle are shorter and cheaper. Confirm inclusions on the booking page.
About 3 hours total. Roughly 75 minutes inside the Imperial Palace grounds, a 20-minute walk between sites, and 60–75 minutes at Nijo Castle. Total walking distance is 4–5 km at an easy pace, all on flat ground except for a few stone steps inside Nijo Castle's Ninomaru Palace.
Technically no — entry is free and guided tours inside are offered for free by the Imperial Household Agency. But those free tours are in Japanese with limited English handouts, are often booked out weeks ahead, and don't cover the wider historical context. A paid English-speaking guided walking tour gives you both sites plus storytelling continuity in English.
The corridors of Ninomaru Palace were built with special metal clamps between the floorboards that chirp like birdsong when stepped on. This was an intruder-alarm system: any ninja approaching the shogun's sleeping quarters would be heard. You will walk on them during the tour — every guest produces the chirp. It's unmistakable.
Easy to easy-moderate. Flat gravel paths inside the Imperial Palace. The walk between sites is on flat Kyoto streets (no hills). Inside Nijo Castle there are a few stone steps but the main palace tour is level. Total distance across 3 hours is about 4–5 km at a relaxed pace with multiple stops.
Outside yes — courtyards, gates, gardens are all photo-friendly. Inside Nijo Castle's Ninomaru Palace photography is forbidden (strict rule, guards patrol). The Imperial Palace reception halls also limit interior photography. Your guide will point out the rules site by site — outdoor shots of both palaces are the iconic photos anyway.
Licensed English-speaking guide, headsets for audio clarity, Nijo Castle admission (on the featured tour), and all in-palace logistics. Not included: food, drinks, and transport to the meeting point. Plan to buy lunch after the tour — the area between Imperial Palace and Nijo has several traditional soba restaurants.
Small-group format — usually 6–12 guests on the featured Imperial Palace & Nijo tour. Private tour options (from $62) are 1–6 people for a more personalised experience. Large bus-based tours may group 20+; they're rare in Kyoto's walking-tour category. Check the booking description before confirming.
Any season except mid-summer (July–August can be 35°C+ with humidity). Cherry blossom (late March) and autumn leaves (mid-November) are spectacular but pricier and book out 2–3 weeks ahead. Winter (Dec–Feb) is cool, crowd-free, and the palaces look striking in occasional snow. May, June, and September are the best-value months.
Different things. Imperial Palace Park (Kyoto Gyoen) is the large public gardens surrounding the palace — open dawn-to-dusk, always free. The Imperial Palace itself is the walled complex within the park. Entry to the palace requires either a guided tour or free self-guided admission during open hours. Walking tours cover both the gardens and the palace buildings.
Comfortable walking shoes — you'll be on your feet for 3 hours on a mix of gravel paths and wooden floors. Easily removable shoes are best for the Nijo Castle portion (shoes come off to enter Ninomaru Palace). In summer: lightweight breathable clothing and a hat. In winter: a warm coat — Nijo's palace rooms are unheated.
