"My family and I did today and had a brilliant time! The guide - HaiHei? - was amazing! Very knowledgable on Kendo and gave us the history of it and the start. The instructions were clear and he gave us plenty of time to take photos of each other. Because it’s a little bit further out it does feel like a real adventure to get there and complete! Would absolutely recommend!"

How the Samurai Experience Works
Four steps from arrival to your first kendo strike.
Arrive at the Dojo
Arrive at the samurai dojo (usually in central Kyoto, walkable from Karasuma-Oike or Shijo subway stations). Remove your shoes and meet your sensei — usually a licensed kendo or iaido teacher with 20+ years of experience.
Get Into Uniform
Full uniform provided — hakama trousers, kimono-style top (keikogi), and obi belt. Staff help you dress in the correct samurai style. This takes about 10 minutes.
Learn Kata & Swing a Katana
Learn basic kendo stances (kamae), overhead strikes, and side cuts. Handle a real katana (not a toy) under close supervision. Some classes include target cutting with a bamboo sword.
Photo & Certificate
Finish with professional photos in full uniform wielding your katana. Most dojos give you a certificate signed by the sensei. Full session is 60–90 minutes.

What Visitors Say
"My friends and I arrived for the experience with little to no knowledge of the ways of Kendo and samurai. We really enjoyed ourselves with learning some basics in relation to those arts. The uniform was a nice touch to learn about and how to wear as well. Our instructor was a brilliant teacher and also had a great sense of humour who also taught us some terminology and theory behind Kendo and Samurai. I would highly recommend this experience."
"Very enriching in terms of both learning the way of the Samurai as well as practicing some of the basic first steps. Highly recommended."
"My son and husband did this class and had a great time. The knowledge of the host was obvious and he obviously enjoys what he does. Would recommend for anyone wanting a samurai experience that has authenticity attached."
"Great activity for all ages, really loved learning more about the history of the samurai and getting to practice with a katana! I was hoping there was a point where my partner and I got to battle with full gear but it was just practice."
"So pleased we did this . Session was informative and fun and the host had a great lighthearted manner that got the information across in a way that you took it all in . Being able to try out the uniform and basic technique was a great experience"
"Taka was great!! Couldn’t have asked for a better teacher honestly, his knowledge was great and he made it a very enjoyable experience. Thank you! :))"
"Taka is simply the best possible teacher. He provided us with an interesting theoretical overview of the art of the samurai and Kendo, and subsequently guided us through the practical session. Everything was wonderful."

"this was so fun and informative! yes, it’s very much a tourist activity but at least we got to learn about kendo fighting and samurais while wearing cool gear. thanks studio nin!"

"A unique experience with someone from a shogun line. Awesome."
"Outstanding experience! The historical knowledge receieved was everything & alot of fun practicing kendo skills! worth a booking! wonderful host! He is a great guy!"
"Great experience! You learn a lot about the Japanese culture from the history of samurai. Furthermore you get to do some very cool kendo training with equipment on. The guide was super knowledgeable, friendly and funny. I definitely recommend this as a cultural experience. If going in the colder months I can recommend putting on a good base layer and warm socks as it is quite chilly in the dojo. And you also practice the training outside ."

"excellent experience,!"

"Fantastic!! Do not miss this one"

"the history was fascinating. there could be larger size gee's for the big men"

"Taka è una forza della natura! L'esperienza è stata formativa, perché abbiamo imparato tanto sui samurai e sull'arte della spada, ma soprattutto divertente, perché abbiamo praticato un vero combattimento! Peccato per la location un po' fuori mano ma davvero, un'esperienza impagabile ❤️"

Everything you need to know about samurai and ninja experiences in Kyoto.
Yes. Serious samurai classes use a real katana (katana) under direct supervision from a licensed kendo or iaido instructor. Beginners start with a wooden bokken practice sword before handling the real blade. Budget museum-based experiences use practice swords only.
Absolutely — kids aged 8+ love these experiences. Most classes have child-sized uniforms and practice swords. Classes with real katana handling typically have a minimum age of 12 for the cutting practice, but full-participation kendo classes are suitable for children.
Samurai experiences focus on kendo stances, sword handling, and formal uniform. Ninja experiences include shuriken (star throwing), blowpipe practice, and wall-climbing basics — lighter, more playful, and often combined with a ninja museum tour. Most operators offer a combined option.
No. Classes advertised as 'experience' rather than 'training' are all English-led. The sensei and staff speak English, instructions are translated live, and written guides are provided. Deep traditional kendo training for serious learners may require basic Japanese.
Wear comfortable, loose clothes — the samurai uniform goes over them. Tabi socks or plain socks are required (leave street socks at the door). Avoid tight jeans or skirts, which restrict the kendo stances. Shoes come off at the dojo entrance.
Yes, for the interactive elements. The museum has English guided tours, a katana-cutting demonstration, shuriken practice, and ninja costume photo opportunities. Entry includes participation — it's not a traditional 'read the plaque' museum. Tickets $21, lasts 90 minutes.
Budget experiences (museums) run 60–90 minutes. Kendo classes are 90–120 minutes. Full-uniform sword-handling premium classes run up to 3 hours including photo sessions. Plan lunch or dinner around it — you'll have built an appetite.
Real katana require an export permit and have to be declared on customs forms. Decorative replicas are freely available (around $100–400) and most classes sell them at the end. For a real katana, factor in shipping costs and a 2–4 week customs process.
Kendo is modern competitive sword-fighting (bamboo swords, armor, points-based sparring). Iaido is drawing and cutting kata with a real katana, solo and meditative. Kenjutsu is the traditional battlefield sword art. Most tourist classes teach simplified kendo or iaido — kenjutsu is rarer.
Central Kyoto has 4–5 dojos offering tourist-friendly classes — most are within 10 minutes of Karasuma-Oike or Shijo subway stations. The Arashiyama-area Samurai Kembu Theater combines a class with a live kembu sword dance performance.
